Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove excess abdominal skin and fat while tightening the muscles underneath, resulting in a smoother and firmer midsection.

Types of Tummy Tuck
  • Full Tummy Tuck: Addresses the whole abdomen, tightens muscles, removes skin, repositions the navel
  • Mini Tummy Tuck: Targets the lower abdomen only; smaller incision and quicker recovery
  • Extended Tummy Tuck: Includes abdomen and flanks; ideal for post-weight loss patients
  • Fleur-de-Lis Tummy Tuck: Adds a vertical incision to remove significant skin, often for post-bariatric patients
  • MILA (Minimal Invasive Lipoabdominoplasty): A less invasive tummy tuck combined with liposuction for quicker recovery and reduced scarring.

Combination Options: Tummy tuck surgery can also be combined with liposuction body contouring for targeted fat removal and Jplasma for enhanced skin tightening.

Each procedure has its own benefits, and your surgeon will help determine which approach will best suit your body type and desired results.

Procedure

A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 2-4 hours. Key steps include:

  • Incisions & skin removal: A horizontal incision is made low on the abdomen, with an additional cut around the navel if needed.
  • Muscle repair: For diastasis recti (muscle separation), the surgeon realigns and tightens abdominal muscles.
  • Fat & skin removal: Excess fat and skin are trimmed for a smoother contour.
  • Navel repositioning: The navel is repositioned to look natural (in full tummy tucks).
  • Closure: Incisions are closed with sutures, and the area is bandaged for recovery.
Recovery

Recovery from a tummy tuck takes time, with several weeks of limited activity:

  • First week: Swelling and discomfort. Compression garments help reduce swelling and support healing.
  • Weeks 1-2: Stitches are removed; light activities are permitted, but avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Weeks 4-6: Gradual return to physical activities as healing progresses.
  • Long-term results: Final results appear over several months as swelling subsides.
Benefits of Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck offers both aesthetic and functional benefits:

  • Improved contour and slimmer waistline: By addressing excess skin and muscle laxity, a tummy tuck can give you a flatter, more toned abdomen.
  • Boosted confidence: Feel comfortable in clothing and swimwear
  • Relief from diastasis recti: Eases symptoms like back pain and poor posture
  • Better fit: Clothes fit more comfortably and flatter your shape
