Dr. Mena Shehata is a consultant psychiatrist, she is highly qualified and has 15 years experience in psychiatry. Dr. Mena Shehata has worked with a culturally diverse population across the Middle East and Australia. She accomplished the Arab Board in medical Specialization in Psychiatry and the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists from the United Kingdom.
Dr. Mena Shehata graduated from Ain shams university, Egypt in 2007, she completed the psychiatry residency program at Hamad Medical corporation (HMC) Doha- Qatar in 2013.
Upon completing her residency in psychiatry, Dr. Mena Shehata worked as an integral member of launching team of first child and adolescent mental health services in Doha-Qatar, Where she was leading specialized clinics for neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and Autistic Disorders. She relocated to Australia from 2016 to 2022, where she gained extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. She worked closely with patients suffering from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, gender dysphoria, personality disorders and schizophrenia, among other conditions. Dr. Mena Shehata has a special interest in treating patients with a history of trauma. She offers assessments and treatment plans to neurodiverse and trauma patients across all age groups. During her work in Australia, she gained extensive experience in working with women who develop psychiatric issues before, during and after giving birth (Perinatal Psychiatry).
Dr. Mena Shehata is enthusiastic about understanding the biological and psychosocial factors associated with early experiences in life and their role in the development of mental illness as well as resilience and adaptation skills. Therefore, she believes in early intervention and works closely with new and expectant mothers to identify and treat the signs of mental illness that can affect both the mother and the child.
She is a strong advocate for patient-centred care; tailoring treatment plans to the individual needs of each patient. She has integrated various modalities into her practice, including acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and Adapted DBT for Complex PTSD. She also received accredited TMS training in London 2024. She works collaboratively with youth, families, and schools on setting personalized, effective treatments plans towards achieving functional recovery and addressing social and emotional wellbeing.
