Tonsils, the pair of tissue masses at the back of the throat, are part of the immune system where they can protect the body from infection. However, tonsils themselves can get infected or inflamed – i.e. Tonsillitis – and may need treatment or removal.
A surgical procedure to remove the tonsils completely from its bed/location in the area of the soft palate (throat).
It is performed with the use of diathermy (cauterization), radiofrequency or laser where the patient is given general anesthesia.
The procedure usually takes between 10min to 15min on each side.
Recovery time takes from 10 days up to 2 weeks – depending on the healing process.
