Indigestion (Dyspepsia)

Indigestion (Dyspepsia)

Indigestion, or dyspepsia, is a common digestive issue causing discomfort in the upper abdomen. It can affect anyone and often occurs after eating.

Indigestion refers to a group of symptoms that are often linked to eating. It occurs when the stomach acids irritate the lining of the stomach or esophagus. Though not usually a sign of a severe condition, indigestion can be uncomfortable and bothersome if it occurs frequently.

Symptoms

Indigestion can feel like:

  • Burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest (similar to heartburn)
  • Bloating and a feeling of fullness, even with small meals
  • Excessive gas and belching
  • Nausea or queasiness
  • A sour taste in the mouth or nausea
  • Occasional vomiting (in severe cases)
Causes

Indigestion is typically triggered by:

  • Diet: Foods high in fat, caffeine, alcohol, or spices can trigger indigestion.
  • Overeating: Overeating or eating too quickly can lead to bloating.
  • Stress and anxiety: Mental health can impact digestion, and stress is known to worsen indigestion.
  • Medications: Certain medications like NSAIDs, antibiotics, or iron supplements may irritate the stomach.
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Frequent acid reflux is often linked to chronic indigestion.
Prevention

Preventing indigestion often means adjusting eating habits and lifestyle:

  • Eat smaller meals: Frequent, smaller meals are easier to digest.
  • Avoid triggers: Reduce intake of caffeine, fatty foods, and alcohol.
  • Exercise regularly: Physical activity helps promote healthy digestion and relieve stress.
  • Manage stress: Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation to reduce stress.
  • Stay upright after meals: Wait 2–3 hours before lying down.

Treatment Options

For quick relief:

  • Antacids: Over-the-counter options that neutralize stomach acid.
  • H-2-receptor blockers: Medications that reduce stomach acid production.
  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs): Effective for GERD and chronic indigestion, reducing acid long-term.

In cases where indigestion is persistent or severe, consulting a healthcare provider is essential to rule out other conditions and receive proper treatment.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If indigestion occurs frequently, it’s essential to consult a doctor, especially if accompanied by:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent vomiting or blood in stool
  • Difficulty swallowing
