MIGRAINE HEADACHE


Migraine Headache is a neurological condition marked by recurring, intense headaches, usually on one side of the head. It is more than just a headache, often accompanied by symptoms like nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and sometimes visual disturbances called aura.

Symptoms

Migraine symptoms can vary widely among individuals but commonly include:

  • Throbbing Headache: Typically, on one side of the head, lasting between 4 hours to 3 days
  • Aura: Occurs in about 25% of migraine sufferers and can involve visual disturbances (flashing lights, blind spots), sensory (tingling or numbness), and speech difficulties.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: A frequent accompaniment to migraine headaches.
  • Sensitivity to Light, Sound, and Smell: Many individuals with migraines seek a dark, quiet room to alleviate discomfort.
  • Fatigue and Dizziness: Some experience fatigue or dizziness before, during, or after the attack.
  • Neck Stiffness and Pain: Muscle tension in the neck and shoulders is common.
Common Triggers

Migraine triggers vary from person to person, but some common ones include:

  • Stress: Emotional or physical stress.
  • Hormonal Changes: Menstruation
  • Some food and Drinks: Alcohol, aged cheeses, processed foods.
  • Lifestyle changes: Lack of Sleep and Hunger
  • Environment: Weather Changes
  • Dehydration: Not drinking enough water
  • Some Medications: Hormonal Therapy

Diagnosis

Diagnosing migraines Headache involves a comprehensive assessment by Neurologists. They will take a medical history, discuss symptom patterns, and may recommend diagnostic tests to rule out other conditions: CT & MRI of Brain.

Treatment

Migraine treatment aims to relieve symptoms and improve overall quality of life. There are two primary approaches:

  • Acute treatment for managing individual attacks
  • Preventive treatment to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines attacks.
