Prostate is a male accessory sexual organ, located just below the bladder. Cancer can develop in the prostate after the age of 40 years.
The risks factors include advancing age, family history of prostate cancer and African American origin. Obesity and hypertension are weak risks factors.
Prostate cancer is mostly asymptomatic but can present with lower urinary tract symptoms or symptoms of advanced disease.
Prostate cancer can be detected in the early phase of disease by screening test. Screening tests include blood test called prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and examination of the prostate by finger. Patient with abnormal screening test requires MRI of the prostate and prostate biopsies to diagnose prostate cancer.
Prostate biopsy can be done by traditional Transrectal Ultrasound guided prostate biopsies or more advanced transperineal prostate biopsies which is high standard of care. In some cases, a combination of ultrasound with MRI images (MRI fusion biopsy) might be necessary.
At HSMC we offer comprehensive prostate cancer screening and diagnostic work-up. We are performing transrectal and transperineal prostate biopsies with cognitive targeting for cancer detection which is not widely available in UAE.
If you are more than 45 years of age visit HSMC for prostate cancer screening. Early cancer detection allows the physician to offer curative treatment and can save your life.
